Quick Link: Academic & Information Skills Classes Request Form

If your students are new to tertiary study they may not yet have the academic skills they require to complete their course work. However, as a course tutor you may not have the time to teach those skills yourself. The Learning Services team is available to teach academic and information literacy skills to your students, within the context of your course. These classes can be provided at both the City and Sullivan Avenue campuses, at no cost to you or your faculty.

Class Content

We offer a range of classes, including:

  • Study Skills - time management, reading techniques for academic texts, effective listening and note taking, etc.
  • Assignment analysis – how to begin an assignment and plan the assignment.
  • Finding and evaluating Information – how to access information from a variety of sources, including the library databases and catalogue, and use effective Internet searching skills. Evaluating and using this information effectively.
  • Academic writing – the structure, format and presentation of essays, reports, literature reviews and annotated bibliographies.
  • Referencing – APA-style referencing (and Chicago-style referencing for Design). Avoiding plagiarism. Effective paraphrasing.
  • Editing, revising and proofreading strategies.
  • Exam revision, including multi choice questions.
  • Oral presentation skills.
  • Maths (for Maths classes and support, contact Silvia Santos).
Classes on any other academic skills can be delivered on request.

Booking a Class

You can book a one-off class, or a series of classes. We work with you to ensure the classes are scheduled at the most appropriate time in your course, and where possible we contextualise the classes around an assignment. This helps students engage with the academic skills they learn in these classes. Experience shows that academic and information literacy skills classes are best delivered “just in time”, rather than “just in case”, as the learning is more effective and meaningful.

In addition, the classes are timetabled into a scheduled class time when you, the tutor, can be present. Research shows that this collaborative approach increases the effectiveness of the classes. Where appropriate we can also support you to deliver this material yourself. This again increases the effectiveness of the delivery.

We are happy to discuss how best to teach these academic and information literacy skills to your students. Even if you do not know the exact dates you might need these classes, please contact us as soon as you can to talk about options, so that we can work out how best to accommodate your needs – especially for the peak periods of Term One and Term Three.

Bookings for all Learning Services classes are managed by Lis Roche (extn. 8441). Please complete the Class Request Form to initiate the process.
